Game creation reflection (Old Is Gold)

Once again this course continues to interest me and grasp my attention more and more at the time I am losing interest and wanting to be done with all my other courses. The final activity/group project that we had in our last module was really appealing to me. The project was basically to come with the idea of an educational game to raise awareness towards some of the major problems in Egypt.

Our group came up with the idea of a historical educational game. It was chosen to be as such as history, historical places, monuments and even achievements are totally underestimated in Egypt by the people and the even the governments. Not to mention that realizing the importance of history greatly enhance the emotional attachment of the people to their country and their sense of nationalism. It also emphasizes on the idea that history keeps on repeating itself and most of the things invented or discovered nowadays are evolution of ideas and theories that have already existed in the past.

The process of creating the game was really fun and beneficial. Most of what we have learned about thinking creatively and functioning in a group to come up with creative ideas was implemented in this project. We started by voting on the preferences of the group members, each presented his/her argument about why they favor a topic over the other. Of course judgment was totally differed until we all agreed on a topic. After agreeing on the game’s objective, we turned our white hats on and started collecting some data such as; to which age group is the game intended, what are the most played games by such age group, etc. Then the process of thinking divergently started to figure out how to implement the agreed upon ideas in a creative, interactive, fun and most importantly educational way. At first we were favoring more the idea of having it as an electronic game, but then we decided to have our game as a board game, to be able to create a decent demo for it. Another reason is that we think that technology is becoming an anti social cancer that is spreading everywhere; we wanted to involve physical interaction to our game.

Creating such game helped us to improve our creative skills, ability to work in groups and communication skill (especially that we had to communicate using emails, texting and phone calls due to time limitation). The last stage involved getting other groups feedback about our game, to find out if we lacked any detail or were unintentionally functionally fixed on an opinion or idea that may have had some flaws. We explained to the objective of the game and what is it, how is it played and its rules. They did help us to spot few drawbacks in how the game is played and provided us with ideas to improve it.





Educational game




The problem is that we tend to think of education in general that it should be something serious and fun should be within limits when it comes to education so that the kids won’t miss the “moral” “benifit” from the game, thus when tend to come up with an educational its usually boring or inefficient as a game. However imagine having a game that joins between fun and educational purpose, a game that unconsciously truly leaves an impact on kids and even adults.

No matter how old I get, this brilliant game stays my favorite and I have a lot of fun playing it! It basically combines some of the important factors mentioned in the page titled “What makes a good game?”, that should be present in an educational game. This game  has a tremendous stock of vocabulary that anyone who play this game would probably benefit from. It also helps in teaching the kids or even adults how to work or function under pressure, communicate with their group, be creative in delivering/presenting the words and it even enhances their drawing/ artistic skills. The game also involves a challenging and fun atmosphere.

Pictionary can be uttered slightly to be even more educational than it already is through changing the cards to more educational subjects, like cells or organs from biology for instance! In my humble opinion, not only pictionary but any board game is like a pizza, it can have many different tastes just through changing few ingredients!

Slimming doesn’t have to be boring

The idea is novel, creative, interactive and to the point. It is basically brilliant.

Coca-Cola a smile of hope :)

It is such an inspiring and motivating commercial, not to mention the catchy song and the fact that its sung by kids makes it seem more true and touching. Thats definitely a great example of a good and efficient advertisement.

This one too is one of my favorites.

Definitely a major factor that catches the attention of the person watching the commercial is the catchy song. After the commercial was shown on TV the song went viral, people made it their ringtone and listened to it everywhere. Using the famous band Cairokee and singer Aida El Ayubi of course also greatly contributed to the rising popularity of the song. The entire commercial is rather long, which is why they showed only parts of it when they aired it on TV not all at once. But despite the length it still remains appealing. The song is joyful and engaging and the commercial has a positive atmosphere, which makes the viewer not want to change the channel anyway. Furthermore, the simple design of the commercial, having each action accompanied by a small phrase of what this person does, makes the viewer able to understand the message right away and follow through easily.

The whole idea of the commercial itself of initiating the chain reaction, making someone else smile who in return will also make another person smile until each one experiences their share of joy in life is very appealing. All of this, the ad suggests, can be initiated through a very simple action of yours.

It further speaks to people’s humanity and inner goodness. Encouraging them to make a stranger happy has a weirdly satisfying and rewarding connotation to it. Seeing the big smiles on the children’s faces when they receive a balloon or a picture of themselves attracts the viewer and makes him or her empathize. The attractiveness of this idea is further enhanced through indicating the ‘craziness’ of such ideas.

Also, the ideas themselves used by the participants of this commercial to make the people around happy are very creative. Unconventional initiatives to sparking joy in other people’s lives were shown and promoted, such as randomly distributing balloons, building a big swing, doing trips with elderly, hugging people with a big smiley face on your head, cleaning the museum, etc. The commercial depicts means, in which one can serve the community, raise awareness, make people happy and engage playful children all with a very simple and easily applicable ideas. All actions revolved around the concept of ‘if it means to be crazy to make a stranger happy, then be crazy’. It encourages people to get out of their comfort zone and explore the beauty of giving and sharing happiness with the people around you through crazy little actions.

The entire commercial in the end brings across the major message of the brand Coca-Cola being correlated to joy. They did so in a very clever manner, without even explicitly mentioning the brand’s name throughout the commercial and the song. However they created a general atmosphere of happiness, reciprocal empathy and caring which ultimately revolved around the core message and feeling that they wanted to bring across to their audience.

As this commercial in particular is probably more targeting youth, they also used people from that same age group to be the ones initiating the ‘crazy’ ideas. Hence, the general atmosphere of the commercial seems appealing, the song is catchy and the ideas themselves that were depicted are creative and engage the viewer.

Sky is the limit when it comes to creativity, at least that is what this video suggests I guess.

Communicate without talking

I love about this commercial that it relates so much to us as Egyptian and I just love watching as I can relate to almost every single sign or gesture that is mentioned in the video. What they even offer makes it even nicer and more appealing to me. They are just trying to offer one more way (tool) for the Egyptians to express themselves other than gestures, which they find brilliant and that it differentiates us from other nations!

“The Station”

Too many car ads I know but I just love them! Suspense was obviously there theme in this commercial. What i like the most about this one is that it emphasizes about a very specific aspect/option in the car, and thats key point for the marketing campaign. I think that it is also directly related to their audience or customers, most of us know how expensive is gasoline abroad, so i guess that a car like this running on diesel would be more than an enough reason to favor a car on the other.

Totally out of the box and definitely attracted huge amount of people, come on who wouldn’t be interested in the first real INVISIBLE car!
